VIDEO: Freebirds debut in the WWF (c.1984)

I'D READ The Fabulous Freebirds' run in the WWF was brief - so brief in fact I believed they didn't even appear in any televised matches.

I'm glad to find I was wrong.

This squash was taped in Philadelphia, PA on August 4, 1984. Babyfaces Michael Hayes, Terry Gordy and Buddy Roberts (with David Wolff and Cyndi Lauper as their managers) take on the killer team of Ron Shaw, Rene Goulet and Charlie Fulton. Mayhem ensues including a vicious, botched triple-team power bomb (back when NO-ONE else was using that move) for the finish.

I gather the Freebirds originally used Freebird by Lynard Skynard as their theme music, but WWE has since overdubbed Hayes' own crappy-but-I-still-like-it song, Badstreet USA (damn them copyright fees).

Poor drunken Freebirds - I can't believe they blew such a big opportunity working for Vince. Still, you have to admire guys who love boozing way better than they do big money and fame.

Gorilla's description of the powerbomb was priceless... Back drop into an upside-down bearhug!
